THE REESE HOME
Interior images

The home features many different kinds of wood. The windowsills, baseboards, door casings, ceiling box beams, and cabinets are all either reclaimed/recycled lumber or Forestry Stewardship Council Certified lumber. The kitchen cabinets are cherry and the master bath cabinets are bird's eye maple. The beams in the living room are from pickle vats in California.

Two of the counter surfaces in the kitchen are PaperStone, a product made from recycled paper, cashews, nut oils and water-based resins.

The heat recovery ventilator system effectively removes stale inside air and delivers fresh outside air throughout the house. A heat exchanger reduces heat loss during this process.

The house is built with very few products or finishes that "off gas"or contribute VOCs to the indoor environment. The concrete and tile floors basically eliminate carpeting and vinyl products. The caulks, adhesives, finishes, and paints used are "Health spec" or have "low VOC ratings". The garage has its own exhaust fan to remove engine fumes.

The least visible feature is the ground source heat pump/radiant floor heating system. Outside the house, installed 6 feet under the ground and running some 1800 linear feet, are temperature-sensitive pipes that allow a heat exchanger/heat pump system, (ground source heat pump) to deliver a heated mixture of water and anti-freeze-like chemicals via flexible tubing throughout the home's concrete floor. The warm fluid heats the concrete and warms the house.

  • Appliances, lighting, and ventilation fans are Energy Star rated.
  • Plumbing features are water conserving/low flow designs.
  • Sola-Tubes are used to bring natural light into low-light areas. (See photo of the hall.)
  • The house is wired for Generator Transfer capabilities during power outages.
  • The gardens and pathways combine water and soil conservation principles by using drought tolerant and native plantings, and water reclaiming and erosion reducing surfaces.
